Assessment & Support
Six steps, repeating — content taught, practised, assessed and fed back, with the support named rather than assumed.
Chapter 04
How a year actuallyruns
Six steps, repeating. Content is taught, practised, assessed and fed back — and where a subject needs more, the support is named rather than assumed.

Assessment is more than an exam
Assessment ismore than a paper.
A result is one reading of a year. The school assesses across the whole of it — understanding in the room, application in the laboratory, progress across terms, and the feedback that follows each.
- Classroom Learning and understanding, every day.
- Practical Application and experimentation.
- Progress Continuous academic development.
- Feedback What happens next, together.
Published when it matters
Our assessmentstructure.
Four things the school states about how a year is examined. The marks a promotion turns on are set out in the policy itself rather than paraphrased here.
-
01
Half-yearly examination
A written examination partway through the session, evaluating understanding and academic progress.
-
02
Annual examination
The assessment at the end of the academic session, and the one a promotion turns on.
-
03
Report card
Results reach parents on the report card, and sit in the parent portal between meetings.
-
04
Retest / improvement
Additional teaching and a retest, on a timetable the school publishes in full.
- View the detailed promotion policy and information
Support that makes a difference
Support beginswhere a difficulty appears.
Every student learns differently. What matters is that each of the four channels below is published by name and has rules attached — so a family can check what happens next rather than hope that something will.
- 01 Remedial support Additional teaching in the subject that needs it — attached to a subject, not to a student.
- 02 Mentoring A member of staff who knows the child as a person rather than as a name on a class list.
- 03 Retest No sooner than ten days after results, two clear days apart, and results inside two and a half weeks.
- 04 Parent partnership Meetings placed on the session calendar, and a portal carrying reports in between.
Parent–teacher connection
Progress isa conversation.
Parent–teacher meetings are placed on the academic calendar for the session, alongside the examination dates, the terms and the holidays — so a parent knows the date months in advance and can read it against the paper it follows.
- Academic progress, and the strengths behind it
- The areas that need attention next
- Support strategies, planned together
- Preparation for the examination that follows
Meeting dates sit on the academic calendar; the wider parent channels are on Parent Partnership.
What happens next?
Noticed, understood,and acted on.
-
01
Notice
A mentor who already knows the child sees the change first.
-
02
Understand
The subject, not the student, is identified as the thing that needs work.
-
03
Support
Additional teaching in that subject, before any retest is sat.
-
04
Improve
A retest on a published timetable, and the result declared with the annual one.
Assessment with purpose
Assessment tells us where to go next.
Learning continues through feedback, support and the opportunity to improve. The school publishes the cycle, the support channels and the retest calendar. It does not publish examination dates, weightings or the promotion threshold — and none is estimated here.
