Mentoring
What a school staffs for says more than what it says about itself.
What the school publishes
Someone who knowsthe child.
Sunbeam states one thing about mentoring: that every student has a member of staff who knows them as a person rather than as a name on a class list. It is a single line, and it is not expanded here into a programme that has not been described.
What that line is for is easy to say without inventing anything. A subject teacher seeing a child four times a week may not notice a change in them. Someone who already knows the child does — and the years in which a student is least likely to raise a problem themselves are exactly the years in which that difference matters.
The line sits under Assessment & Support on the school’s own assessment pages. It does not say how a mentor is assigned, how often they meet, or how a parent reaches one.
The relationship
More thana name on a list.
The firmer evidence is in the school’s own recruitment posters, where a school states what it will and will not accept. Four kinds of person are named across them and its campus inventory.
- 01 Student mentor A member of staff who knows the student as a person, not as a row on a class list.
- 02 School counsellor Advertised at MA in counselling or clinical psychology, with two years’ experience as a school counsellor.
- 03 Clinical psychology counsellor Listed with a wellness trainer among the posts the school has advertised for.
- 04 BCS Counsellors Trained counsellors available to students, listed among the school’s campus provision.
Rows two and three are read off the school’s published recruitment notices, which are on Career.

Noticed beforeit is a result.
The school publishes that every student has a mentor, and its own adverts show what it requires of a counsellor. It does not publish a ratio, a programme name, a meeting frequency, or how a parent reaches a child’s mentor — and none of those is estimated here.
Knowing a student changes what support can mean.
Where a difficulty turns out to be a subject rather than a state of mind, it goes to remedial support.
